Local Food Summit PDF Print E-mail

Hello Green Market Supporters!

I just wanted to touch base with you all and let you know some of the developments we have going on. There are quite a few pieces coming together.

First, I'd just like to tell you guys a little about the Local Food Summit that I attended this past Thursday [see:http://www.kyagr.com/pr/kpc/April102011/Bluegrass-Summit-considers-local-food-systems-in-Kentucky.htm] . It was an all day event and was easily worth the trip to Lexington. The day started with different groups coming to give short talks (reminded me of TED; for those of you familiar) about what there is to accomplish. This lead into some speakers like Michael Bomford from the Organic Group at Kentucky State University. He showed the crude oil equivalent of energy invested in the US Food System per person daily . His data comes from, "Energy in the US Food System." The display was quite surprising as well as disturbing. His "recipe" can be found here: http://organic.kysu.edu/DailyFoodRecipe.pdf

Next, John-Mark Hack from Marksbury Farm Market spoke [see: http://marksburyfarm.com/]. John-Mark is a founding partner of a new USDA-inspected processor and distributor of locally produced, naturally and humanely raise, pastured poultry, pork, and beef located in Garrard County. He talked about the necessity of the "infrastructure" to be in place for the farmer.

Later, Sarah Fritschner from Louisville Metro Government (and former Washington Post and Courier Journal Food Editor) gave a really good talk about the changes that have happened in the state recently. From the amount of schools that are reaching out to the community farmers for food to the Governors Mansion requesting tons of local food for dinner for themselves or when they're hosting an event.

There were MANY other speakers that presented and had really interesting and exciting things to say...but I'll leave it here. I just wanted you all to have an idea of how the day went and know that we made some contacts that will help us with guidance on getting some grants and loans.

After the event, I was given a tour of Good Foods by the General Manager. WOW! Those guys know their stuff. I'll just say this: 125 employees, 10 million+ sales, in the midst of ANOTHER renovation, fantastic people and place.

In GREEN MARKET news:

  • Finishing setup of new POS at Mini Market
  • Ability to accept credit cards should start by end of week
  • Spoke with Susan Lambert from Lawrenceberg KY about possible grants (she went to the Governors Office of Ag Policy for us to ask about how we can get some help)
  • Have a meeting with the creator of the Point of Sale (POS) system we're going to use. They just formed last year and have an open ear to suggestions for development
  • Spoke with Health Department about regulations and permits needed to carry local products at retail
  • Cooking with Beshka series is in development
Last, but certainly not least, we have been GIVEN FREE bulk food bins/dispensers from Three Rivers Market in Knoxville. She emailed the other day stating that they will be moving into their new store in the end of July and that we could have them directly after that. I mentioned to Jacki (the GM) that we (the ones who can) would be glad to come down and help open their new store the first day. She said it would be wonderful for any of us that could make it and stated that they are sending some people from their co-op to another co-op opening soon.
Cooperatives cooperate. I'm glad that is so apparent and real.

So, we have a ways to go, but have come far. I certainly feel the energy and I'm excited about what we'll accomplish this year.
